Volcan de Fuego

On June 3rd, Guatemala’s Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) erupted explosively, covering entire residential areas with pyroclastic flow and ash. As of June 19th, more than 110 people have died and at least 200 people are still missing. The biggest problem Guatemala currently faces is unstable conditions. Search operations have been called off due to rain creating poor visibility and possibility of landslides, as well as unstable volcanic and seismic activity. Recently, a new eruption created another pyroclastic flow that covered towns and villages with ash that reaches temperatures of 400 to 700 degrees making search and rescues operations nearly impossible.

Volcan de Fuego is located in San Juan Alotenango about 9.9 miles west of Antigua – Guatemala’s former capital, and 27 miles south-west of Guatemala City. The artisans and organizations we work with are safe and out of harm from this disaster however, thousands of people have had to evacuate their homes.

We are extremely thankful that the artisans we work directly with in Guatemala are safe, but our heart aches for the rest of the families affected by this disaster. Two non-profits we are working with, Mayan Families and Limitless Horizons Ixil, are raising money to provide aid toward those who have been affected. So far, we have been able to donate back to these organizations to help with search and rescue needs like face masks and boots. All sales help us re-invest back in these organizations and provide aid for Guatemala.

Guatemala has a rich history of Mayan ancestry. The culture of Guatemala reflects Mayan and Spanish influences. The artisans we work with extremely intricate in detail and made by hand for a truly artisan feel. We want to continue to promote and share the amazing work that Mayan artisans produce even during this natural disaster and continue to send support to Guatemala.
